Family Isn't Always First

 • Kyle Douglass • Series: Matthew: Meet the Messiah

In Matthew 12:46-50, we have a seemingly random add on text: Jesus’ mother and brothers come to him while he is teaching and request to speak with him. With very few details, we are left to speculate about the reason, but based on context, we can make an educated guess that the conflict arising around Jesus was starting to concern his family. And rather than be an obedient, might we even say polite, son, Jesus refuses their request then names a new set of brothers, sisters and mothers: those who do the will of God. What does Jesus’ response say about the conflict of family obligations with ministry? Despite God putting a huge priority on family, one that usually trumps all other obligations, there are times when family doesn’t come first.
