The Hades Travel Guide
• Series: Matthew: Meet the Messiah
In Matthew 11:20-24, Jesus gets exasperated. Despite teaching and performing miracles, there are still many who refuse to listen, heed his words, and repent of their unbelief and sin. So he starts naming names: Chorazin, Bethsaida, Capernaum. And he says, "Woe to you!" because to reject Jesus is to accept judgement. And their judgment will be worse because they've seen him with their own eyes. Part of his chastisement reminds them of a couple hard realities that apply to us all: that a Day of Judgment is coming for all the living and the dead, that those who reject the Gospel will go to Hades, and eventually be destroyed with Death and Hades, and that the only way out is repentance. Repentance is not the same as believing, but you can't have one without the other. You can't say you believe Jesus, yet not obey him. So will you repent, and accept the forgiveness for your sins, or will you suffer with Sodom, Tyre and Sidon in Hades?
