Healed for a Purpose
• Series: Matthew: Meet the Messiah
In Matthew 8:1-4, Jesus comes down from the Mount where he gave the bulk of his ethical teaching. He's now become exceedingly popular and large crowds follow him. What do we see him do? Matthew's first recorded act is Jesus healing a man with leprosy. This man is an unclean outcast and being healed from leprosy involved a complicated and long process of ceremonial cleansing. Jesus reveals his heart of love by healing the man, but also gives him a specific command to obey the Law and go present himself to the priest to undergo the process of cleansing from Leviticus 14, in order to be a testimony to the religious leaders. This episode teaches us much about the heart and will of God.
